Benning marksmen compete in interservice rifle championship

U.S. Army Marksmanship Training Unit's Service Rifle teams departed Fort Benning last Tuesday for Quantico, Va., where they will compete in the 1971 Interservice Rifle Championships.

This annual event which witnesses competition among the best of the nation's military Service Rifle contenders, will be attended by rifle marksmen from each of the four sister services, the reserve components of each of the National Guard and the Coast Guard. Leading contenders for the championship from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit include MSgt. James McQuien and SFC William R. Lee. McQuien is the All-Army Service Rifle Champion, having won the title at Fort Benning in June with a record breaking 1,940 of a possible 2,000 points.

The Marines, as defending Champions, will be having the top-echelon tournament in which the 300 marksmen will commence firing tomorrow.

Initial competition will be for the Navy Match trophy which features slow fire operation at 200 yards, standing. Each of the Coast Guard, Army, Air Force and Marine Corps trophy matches follow with different rates of fire, positions and ranges.

From the aggregate of these five interservice matches, the championship for the Individual Service Rifle crown will be determined. This will be one of the two big championships to be won by individual shooters during the tournament. The other big prize is the Inter-Service Individual Long Range Championship.

In addition to these two championship crowns, the tournament will feature team matches which culminate with the Interservice Rifle Team Championship in National Match Course firing. This will pit ten men teams firing on the 1,000 yard range.

The Fort Benning marksmen will be departing Quantico on August 13 enroute to Camp Perry, Ohio where they will compete in the National Rifle Matches.
