United They Stand - Divided? Still Stand

MCRD's Rifle Team members put little faith in "united we stand, divided we fall."

They divided into two-man teams Sunday at Camp Pendleton and conquered all comers in the Santa Margarita Gun Club Rifle Match.

Firing in the Service Rifle category, MCRD blasted teams from Twentynine Palms, Barstow, Camp Pendleton, El Toro, Hawaii and civilian gun clubs.

In every match, Depot Marines took at least two of the top three places.

The first match at the 200 yard line saw Maj. William W. McMillan and his partner, Cpl. Jack L. Gracey, finished number one with their 198x15Vs score. Sgt. Myron A. Lippe and GySgt. Joseph D. Viera teamed up to place second with 196x9Vs mark. Cpl. Robert D. Shaver and Cpl. Douglas M. Dehaas copped fourth place with 195x7Vs.

McMillan and Gracey maintained their momentum, firing 200x20Vs to grab first place in the 200 yard rapid match. PFC David J. Thorstad and 1stLt. Jack R. Campbell put together a 200x14Vs score to capture the number two spot.

Shaver and Dehaas, with 199-13Vs, took second in the 300 yard rapid, and McMillan and Gracey, with 198x15Vs, followed closely for third place. Sgt. Alvin R. Larson and Cpl. Lynn V. Chancey hit 198x13Vs for fourth.

The Dehaas and Shaver twosome edged McMillan and Gracey in the fourth match at the 600 yard line with a 197x25Vs tally, good for second place. McMillan and Greacey settled for third with their 197x24Vs.

The rapid fire aggregate was a different story, however. Gracey and McMillan blasted a 398x35Vs score to take second place, while Shaver and Dehaas landed in third with their 398x28Vs. Larson and Chancey finished fourth with 396x33Vs.

The slow fire aggregate saw Gracey and McMillan in first place with their 395x39Vs, and Dehaas and Shaver in third place with 392x32Vs.

McMillan and Gracey, firing in the grand aggregate which has a possible 800 points, zeroed in for a 793x74Vs mark and the top spot. MCRD again came up with a second place on the strength of Shaver and Dehaas' 790x60Vs effort.
