MCS Pistol Team Makes Near Sweep Of Tourney

Shooters of the Marine Corps Team took a firm grip on the pistol championship of the Middle Atlantic States last Sunday afternoon as they made a near sweep of the Regional Pistol Tournament held here at Quantico.

The score board showed Marines winning all four of the major individual championships: .22 caliber, .38 caliber, .45 caliber and the Grand Aggregate. Overall, Marines won 17 of the 21 individual matches, including all four of the team matches.

Once again shooter Capt. W. W. McMillan, won most of the individual matches, taking first place in nine out of 17. His 2623 total score won the Grand Aggregate by 13 points.

He also won the .38 caliber Aggregate with 872 and the .45 caliber aggregate with 871. ActSgt. L. L. Hausman won the .22 caliber aggregate with a score of 882.

In the team matches, the Marine Corps "Blue" combination of Capt. McMillan, 1stSgt. R. O. Jones, ActSSgt. E. Sarver, ActGySgt. M. Pietroforte and ActSgt. Hausman took all four team championships: the .22 caliber with 1167, the .38 caliber with 1145, the .45 caliber with 1152 and the Team Aggregate Match with 3464.

The winner of the .38 caliber team match was decided on the last string of rapid fire as the Marine Corps "Crystal" Team made it close. ActSgt. L. M. Hunt fired a 298 to give his team a final score of 1145 also. However, they lost by 7X's to the winning Blue Team.

The winner of the Grand Aggregate was not decided until the final match as BMI E. F. Chase of the Coast Guard managed to stick close to Capt. McMillan. Going into the final match Chase was only six points behind.

Then McMillan closed the door by firing a 291 with the .45 to up his winning margin to 13 points.

The tournament opened Friday with .22 caliber firing. Chase won the first two matches for the Coast Guard by firing a 193 in the slow fire and a possible in the timed fire.

But the Marines evened the score as McMillan won the rapid fire event with a possible 200 and Hausman took the National Match Course with a 297.

In Saturday's .38 caliber firing, McMillan added to the Marine victories by winning the slow fire and timed fire with a 193 and 200 respectively. In the rapid fire match, Chase took one more for the Coast Guard with 199. ActGySgt D. W. McClure won the .38 caliber National Match Course for the Marines with a 290.

The .45 caliber matches were held on Sunday. Chase started off by winning the slow fire with a 189 score. From then on it was all Marines. ActSSgt. A. Mucci won the timed fire with a possible 200 and McMillan finished by taking the rapid fire with 196 and the National Match Course with a score of 291.

This week the big team will leave for South Bend, Indiana, their final match before the Nationals at Camp Perry, Ohio.
